Baseball Sweeps Conference Foe Eastern Nazarene in Home Opener

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College baseball team swept conference opponent Eastern Nazarene on Friday afternoon in the team's home opener. The Colonels improve to 5-10 overall and 3-1 in the CCC. The Lions fall to 5-10 on the year and 1-5 in league action.

GAME ONE

Game one featured a pitching duel between Curry's David Griffin (Hanover, Mass.) and Eastern Nazarene's Cameron Fiorentino (Uxbridge, Mass.). The two hurlers combined to give up six combined hits while allowing just one run and striking out a combined 13 batters.

The difference in the opening game came in the bottom of the second off the bat of Vincent LoPriore (Boston, Mass.). He got a hold of a pitch and put it over the fence to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.

Following the round tripper, the teams combined for three hits for the rest of the contest.

Michael Moreau (Marshfield, Mass.) paced Curry with a 2-for-3 day at the plate in game one. LoPriore's homer rounded out the hits for the Colonels.

Andrew Santora (Middle Village, N.Y.), John Greenlee (San Marcos, Calif.) and Zach Zaino (Falmouth, Mass.) each had a hit for the Lions to record their three hits on the afternoon.

Griffin picked up the win on the mound, going the distance while striking out four and walking none. Fiorentino was credited with the loss, tossing six innings. He gave up the lone run of the contest while striking out nine and walked none.

GAME TWO

Curry's offense came alive in game number two, accounting for eight runs on nine hits in the 8-1 victory.

The Colonels got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when Justin Cage (Glendora, Calif.) hit a double to right field which scored Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) and Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine) to grab the 2-0 early advantage.

Eastern Nazarene would get a run back in the top of the second. Zaino reached on an error by the Curry pitcher Matt Fogarty (Millis, Mass.) which allowed Greenlee to score to make it 2-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Colonels extended their lead to 6-1. Jack Kallinich (Madison, Conn.) opened the inning with a double to right to score LoPriore. Adam Duarte (East Providence, R.I) followed by reaching on an error by the Lions shortstop. The error allowed Nick Crivello (Millville, Mass.) to cross home. The scoring would close in the frame when McLean singled to score Kallinich.

Curry tacked on two in the fifth, thanks to Mitchell Carvalho (Cranston, R.I.) scoring on a wild pitch and a Duarte single to left to drive in Kallinich for the 8-1 final.

Keller led the Colonels with a 3-for-4 day at the plate in the nightcap. Six other Curry student-athletes tallied a hit each to close the offensive output.

Connor Simpson (Haverhill, Mass.) paced the visitors in game two with two hits. Five other Eastern Nazarene student-athletes registered one hit each.

Fogarty picked up his first win on the mound for the Colonels, tossing five innings. He surrendered five runs on five hits while striking out four and walking one. Ragan Cole (Alamogordo, N.M.) got the loss for the Lions. He gave up eight runs on seven hits while striking out two.  

Curry continues a busy stretch at home on Sunday when they welcoming in Middlebury for a doubleheader beginning at noon. Eastern Nazarene returns to the diamond Saturday for conference doubleheader at Roger Williams starting at noon.
