Men's Basketball Falls 81-61 to Visiting Conference Opponent Salve Regina University

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team fell to visiting Salve Regina University, 81-61, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Colonels to 0-17 on the season and 0-9 in the conference while the Seahawks improve to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in the CCC. 

Salve Regina went on a 7-0 run to start the game's first minute and a half before junior Paul Preziosi (Quincy, Mass.) made a layup to open the score for Curry. After that, the Seahawks went on a 17-4 run to put the score up to 22-4 before the Colonels went on their own 12-4 run in response to cut the deficit to ten points. The teams continued to trade baskets but Salve Regina continued to further their lead and ended the half with a score of 41-28.

Preziosi led the team with 13 first half points and added three total rebounds. Senior James Pina (Warwick, R.I.) was close behind, scoring ten and pulling down a team-high five rebounds.

The Seahawks were led by junior Nicholas Bates (Danvers, Mass.) who led the game with 18 points and also pulled down nine total rebounds. Sophomore Bryce Boggs (Hyde Park, Mass.) followed with nine points and three rebounds.

The teams traded baskets back and forth in the second half but Salve Regina held their lead all the way throughout, getting their highest (20) after Boggs hit both of his free throws to put the score at 51-31 with 15 minutes to go. Down the stretch, the Colonels never gave up and were led by junior Trey Jones (Mattapan, Mass.) who scored 11 second half points and recorded three steals. The Seahawks went onto win by a final score of 81-61.

Preziosi finished with a game second-best 17 points and added a team second-best six rebounds. Pina was right behind with 14 points, and pulled down a team high-seven rebounds. Jones also put up double digits, scoring all 11 of his points in the second half.

Bates finished with the game highs in points (24) and rebounds (13) while shooting 85% from the field. He was followed by Boggs who put up 13 points and added seven boards, both team second-bests.

Both teams return to conference action Wednesday evening as Salve Regina hosts Roger Williams University at 7:30 p.m. while Curry travels to Eastern Nazarene College for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
