Men's Tennis Tops Bridgewater State in Non-League Play, 6-3

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to visiting Curry College on Monday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

 The Colonels improve to 7-10 on the season with the win, while the host Bears fall to 4-4.

 Curry led 2-1 after doubles play. The Colonels then captured four of the six singles matches to secure the 6-3 victory.

 Freshman Ryan Sullivan (Winnetka, Ill.) and sophomore Richie Hefler (Canton, Conn.) posted an 8-2 triumph at the second doubles flight, while the rookie tandem of Zach Muller (Methuen, Mass.) and Ben Higgins (Yarmouth, Maine) teamed up for an 8-6 win at number three.

 Seniors Matt McGee (Warren, R.I.) and Chris Jastrab (Chicago, Ill.) notched the Bears' lone doubles point with an 8-5 victory at the top flight.

 Curry freshman Aidan Roach (Norwell, Mass.) recorded a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win at number one singles. The Colonels also received straight set wins in singles play from sophomore Dawson Stento (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) at the third flight (6-1, 6-2) and Hefler at number four (6-2, 6-3). Hefler's victory secured the fifth and deciding point for the visitors.

 Jastrab and sophomore Alexander Belinsky (Norton, Mass.) picked up singles win for Bridgewater State. Jastrab won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at the second flight, while Belinsky notched a 6-3, 6-0 straight set triumph at number five.

 Jastrab remains unbeaten in singles play this season with a perfect 8-0 record.

 The sixth flight singles match came down to a super tie-breaker. Higgins won the first set, 6-2, while BSU freshman Josh Bean (Kingston, Mass.), making his collegiate debut, tied the match up with a 7-6 (7-4) victory in set two. Higgins, however, would bounce back with a 10-6 win in the super tie-breaker to take the match.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears travel to the University of Southern Maine for a 2:30 Little East Conference match with the Huskies. The Colonels head to Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Western New England University for a 4:15 match with the Golden Bears.
