Women's Basketball Edged By Visiting Coast Guard, 55-53, in Non-Conference Action
MILTON, Mass. – Visiting Coast Guard Academy outlasted Curry College, 55-53, in non-conference women’s basketball action Monday night in Milton. Both teams now stand at 2-1 on the season.

The Colonels led throughout the first half, including an eight-point lead (24-16) at the 2:50 mark after sophomore Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) sank a shot from beyond the arc. The Bears responded with a 7-1 run to close out the half, cutting the deficit to two (25-23) heading into the break.

With 14:49 remaining in regulation, Curry built its lead to six (30-24) after another Beltz three-pointer. Coast Guard slowly chipped away at the deficit, eventually taking its first lead of the game (40-37) after freshman Andrea Barrameda (Stockton, Calif.) made a three with 8:47 on the clock. After sophomore Jamie Waterman (Jasper, Ga.) converted on a layup with 2:32 left in the second half, the Bears held a five-point edge (53-48).

A split pair of free throws by Colonels’ sophomore Samantha Corcoran (Hampton, N.H.) and a successful three-point play by classmate Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) pulled Curry to within one point (53-52) with just under two minutes to go. Both teams shot two free throws each in the closing seconds and split their free throws, leaving Coast Guard with a one-point lead. Curry had possession with nine seconds to go, but the Bears forced a key turnover to secure the victory.

Freshman Meghan Fornaro (Charlton, Mass.) led Coast Guard with a team-high 14 points, while Barrameda contributed 13. Waterman pulled down a team-best eight boards.

Beltz recorded a double-double with game highs in points (17) and rebounds (10). Fallon added 15 points, while Corcoran chipped in with 11. Corcoran also had nine rebounds and three blocks.

Both teams return to action next Monday, as Curry travels to Suffolk for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off, while the Bears visit Framingham State in a 6:00 p.m. contest.
