MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Basketball team notched a 70-61 win against Eastern Nazarene Thursday night at the Student Center Gym at Curry College.
The Colonels improve to 11-7 overall and 8-3 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action with the win. The Lions drop to 6-10 on the season and 5-5 in league play with the decision.
Eastern Nazarene junior Elia Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) started the scoring with a layup 47 seconds into the game. Curry built up a small lead which was later tied at 11 on a three-pointer from sophomore Jasmine Mata (Santa Barbra, Calif.). The Colonels would jump to a 10-point lead (30-20) with six minutes left in the first half on a jump shot from freshman Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.). Senior Jeanette Fallon (Nashua N.H.) would end the first-half scoring with a jump shot to put Curry ahead by the score of 41-27, its biggest lead of the first half.
The Colonels retained the lead for most of the second half despite a 9-2 run by the Lions that brought them to within three points of Curry (54-51). With 3:46 left in the game, senior Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) hit a three-pointer that put the Colonels ahead by six points. A little over a minute later, junior Mhiah Vickers (Westlake Village, Calif.) made a layup and brought Eastern Nazarene within three points again. However, over the last two and a half minutes, Curry pulled away again leading to a 70-61 final score.
Beltz and junior Kerry White (Windham, N.H.) both led the scoring for the Colonels with 15 points, followed by 13 from Fallon. Beltz also led Curry with five assists and four steals while Fallon was right behind her with four assists and three steals. White led the rebounding effort with 11 boards, followed by junior Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.), who grabbed six total rebounds.
