Milton, MA - The Curry Baseball team swept Johnson & Wales on Saturday in a home doubleheader, winning game one 7-3, and then following it up with a 6-3 win in game two. The Colonels are now 4-8 on the season, and 2-1 in CNE play. The Wildcats are now 6-11 and 1-2.
Game One
The Colonels seemingly were going to be in for a long day, as they gave up three runs in the fourth inning to go down 3-0. But they responded immediately with five runs in the bottom of the inning, with the highlight being a Jorge Rodriguez two RBI double. The other three runs scored on errors. The Colonels then added another run in the fifth on another Jorge Rodriguez RBI double. Curry would add one more run in the sixth, on another JWU error.
Henry Marino picked up the win for the Colonels, pitching six innings, and only allowing five hits and three earned run. He struck out four. He was relieved by Ryan Bohrman, who pitched two shutout innings. The ninth inning was given to Ryan Crowley, who also shut the Wildcats down.
The Colonels had seven hits, three of which came from Jorge Rodriguez, and another two from Nick Krise. The Colonels as a team stole five bases.
Game Two
The Colonels slowly built up a lead in this game, scoring once in the first, on a double steal. They then added two runs in the second off the bats of their two hottest hitters, Jorge Rodriguez and Nick Krise. Rodriguez led the inning off with a home run, his third of the year, and then Krise singled home a run to make it 3-0. The Wildcats got two back in the third, but the Colonels immediately got some breathing room back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice bunt by Cooper Salter. After JWU made it 4-3 in the fifth, Salter added a pair of RBI hits, a double in the fifth and a single in the seventh to put the Colonels up 6-3, which would eventually be the final score.
The Colonels had 12 hits in this one, with five players recording multiple hits. Salter had three, while Blake Fuller, Brandon Mantilla-Mercado, Rodriguez, and Krise each had two.
Lucas daCosta went six innings on the mount for the Colonels, allowing six hits and two earned runs. He struck out six, and was relieved by Reegan Thomas. Thomas pitched the last three innings, allowing just three hits, picking up the save.
Across the two games on the day, and 18 innings pitched, the Colonels pitching staff walked just two JWU batters.
