Baseball Battles Nationally Ranked Salve Regina
Newport, RI - The Curry College baseball team dropped a 15-5 decision to nationally ranked Salve Regina on Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Field in Newport.
Curry (6-14) showed early fight in a back-and-forth opening half, but a late surge from the Seahawks (23-2) proved decisive as Salve Regina pulled away over the final two innings to secure the win.
The game began with Salve Regina striking first in the opening inning before Curry responded in the second. Cooper Salter delivered an RBI single to score Blake Fuller and tie the game at 1-1. However, the Seahawks quickly regained control in the second inning, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 advantage.
The Colonels continued to battle back, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning and Salve Regina miscues in the third inning. Curry scored twice on a wild pitch and a throwing error, trimming the deficit to 4-3. In the fourth, Ryan Murphy's RBI single brought in Joey Kazlauskas to even the score at 4-4.
Curry briefly regained the lead in the fifth inning when Taylor Diaz drove in a run with a groundout, making it 5-4, but that would be the final offensive highlight for the Colonels.
The Seahawks added two in the fifth and six more in the sixth to take control of the contest. The Seahawks then added five runs in the seventh, including a three-run home run by Shane Williams, to put the game out of reach.
Offensively, Curry was led by Taylor Diaz, who drove in two runs, while Ryan Murphy added an RBI single and Blake Fuller scored twice. The Colonels finished with 10 hits in the contest.
On the mound, Curry used five pitchers in the game, with Reegan Thomas working three innings of relief. Salve Regina's offense finished with 16 hits and 15 runs, taking advantage of 11 walks issued by Curry pitching.
