Seventh-Inning Rally Sends Curry Baseball to 9-1 Loss Against Nichols
Milton, MA - The Curry College baseball team held an early lead but could not contain a late surge, falling to Nichols, 9-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Vallely Diamond.
Curry struck first in the bottom of the opening inning, as Jorge Rodriguez laced an RBI double to right field to score Anthony Figueroa and give the Colonels a 1-0 advantage.
Starting pitcher Lucas daCosta kept Nichols off the board through the first five innings, working efficiently and allowing just a handful of baserunners while striking out seven. The Bison broke through in the sixth, however, stringing together back-to-back RBI hits from Ryan Keating and Brady Wendell to take a 2-1 lead.
The game shifted decisively in the seventh inning, when Nichols hung seven runs. The rally featured multiple RBI singles, a sacrifice, and two unearned runs following a Curry error, extending the lead to 9-1.
Curry was limited offensively to five hits on the afternoon. Rodriguez led the way with a pair of hits and the team's lone RBI, while Brandon Mantilla-Mercado also recorded a multi-hit performance.
Nichols' pitching staff combined to hold the Colonels scoreless over the final eight innings, with Mitch Brown earning the win in relief.
Up Next: The Colonels will play their sixth consecutive home contest, hoping to right the ship against Brandeis on Wednesday afternoon.
