Colonels Drop Season-Opener at UMass. Boston
BOSTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's basketball team opened its 2025–26 campaign on the road Saturday night, falling to UMass Boston, 76–67, in non-conference action at the Clark Athletic Center. Despite a hard-fought second-half push, the Colonels couldn't overcome a 12-point halftime deficit as the Beacons held off Curry down the stretch to claim the season-opening win.
Freshman Isaiah Andino led the Colonels with a game-high 20 points, shooting 5-of-11 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Andino sparked Curry's second-half comeback bid with aggressive drives to the basket and clutch foul shooting. Manny Hidalgo turned in a strong all-around performance, tallying 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while Favour Okeke added eight points and eight rebounds in a solid effort off the bench.
Senior Jake Bernardo contributed efficient minutes in the post, finishing with six points on 2-of-3 shooting, while Tommy Mallinson added seven points and two assists in 30 minutes of play. The Colonels also saw scoring from Malik Gelinas, who knocked down a pair of three-pointers for six points, and JD Heneke, who chipped in four points and a steal.
Curry shot 42.6% (23-for-54) from the field and 77.3% (17-for-22) from the free throw line while holding a 36–33 advantage on the glass. However, turnovers proved costly, as the Colonels committed 21, leading to several key fast-break opportunities for UMass Boston.
The Beacons were paced by Raphel Laurent, who poured in 24 points on 11-of-22 shooting. Davon Sanders added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Cameron Perkins also netted 16 points. UMass Boston shot 44.1% from the field and forced Curry into 10 steals to maintain their lead throughout the night.
After trailing 39–27 at halftime, Curry surged back within six midway through the second half, fueled by Andino and Hidalgo, but the Beacons answered with timely baskets to preserve the win.
The Colonels return to action on Monday, November 10th, when the Colonels host their home opener against New England College (NEC) at 7:30 PM in Katz Gymnasium.
