Hockey Falls to Neumann University 5-3 in Season Opener
MILTON, Mass.- Neumann University defeated Curry College 5-3, in men's ice hockey action on Saturday night in Milton, Mass. The Knights improve to 1-1-1 overall, while the Colonels fall to 0-1-0 in their season opener.
Curry got on the board early in the opening frame when freshman Joshua Pineiro (Burbank, CA) scored his first collegiate goal at 2:51. Sophomore Casey Brugman (Winthrop, MA) sent a pass to Pineiro from the blue line who chipped it in past Neumann’s goaltender junior Ross MacKinnon (Manchester, CT). The Knights tied the game at the 15:19 mark when sophomore Sean Crozier (Renfrew, ONT) scored his first of the game off assists from sophomore Scott Farrell (Ottawa, ONT) and junior William Lacasse (St. Pie, QB). Neumann gained the lead with just under a minute to play when sophomore Jordan Zalba (Victoria, BC) took a shot from against the boards that snuck past sophomore goaltender Robert Dawson (Woodbury, MN).
During the second period, the Knights took a 4-1 lead when they scored two goals just three minutes apart from each other. Junior Marlon Gardner (Eagle Lake First Nation, ONT) scored off an assist from Lacasse and Zalba scored his second of the night off assists from Farrell and sophomore Steve Gervais (Nepean, ONT). The Colonels got one of their own before the end of the period when junior Steven Mohler (Yorba, Linda, CA) scored a power-play goal. Teammates, junior Ryan Barlock (Niles, IL) and senior Ryan Warsofsky (Marshfield, MA) earned the assists.
Curry cut Neumann’s lead to just one early in the third period off another power-play goal just four minutes into the period. Warsofsky took advantage of the Knight’s penalty and scored his teams’ third goal of the night and his first of the year. Juniors Christopher Atkinson (Sparta, NJ) and Josh Kamrass(Norcross, GA) were credited with the assists. The score would remain at 4-3 until the 19:14 minute mark when freshman Michael Rey (Winnipeg, MB) scored an empty net goal. Rey was assisted by junior Brent Tamane (Pickering, ONT).
The Colonels outshot the Knights 38-31. Curry was 2 for 6 on power plays while Neumann was 1 for 5.
MacKinnon earned the win in net making 35 saves. Dawson made 26 saves in the loss.
Curry's next game is at home on Saturday, November 13 at 7:35 p.m. against Elmira College. Neumann also hosts Elmira on Friday, November 12 for a 7:00 p.m. game start.
