Hockey Notches First Win of the Season in a 3-2 Victory Over Non-Conference Foe Tufts University
MALDEN - The visiting Curry College Colonels scored three goals in the second period, including two on power plays, and held on to pick up their first victory of the season, 3-2, at Tufts in men's college hockey action on Tuesday night at Valley Forum II.
Fifteen penalties were called in the second period, and both teams were able to capitalize on man advantages. Curry scored first when junior captain Payden Benning (Estevan, Saskatchewan) tallied from a tight angle along the right goal line at 6:22 of the second. Two minutes later, the visitors went up 2-0 on a wrist shot by junior Josh Kamrass (Norcross, GA) from the right circle.
The Jumbos cut the lead in half at 13:38 of the second period as senior Tom Derosa (Charlestown, MA) banged in his own rebound on a power play making it 2-1. However, Curry's CaseyBrugman (Winthrop, MA) did the same at 18:13 and the Colonels led 3-1 after two periods. Sophomore defenseman Brett Kaneshiro (Laguna Niguel, CA) had two assists in the period for Curry.
Tufts made it a one-goal game 8:27 into the third when senior Conor Pieri's (Needham, MA) shot from the left half-wall was screened and slipped past the right pad of Curry sophomore goalie Travis Owens(Burbank, CA). However, Curry was able to keep the Jumbos at bay for the rest of the game.
After Tufts pulled goalie Scott Barchard (Reading, MA) with 1:23 remaining in the third, the Jumbos needed to take a penalty to prevent a Curry open-net goal with 32 seconds remaining. Barchard returned to the cage and was unable to leave as the Colonels kept the puck in the Tufts zone.
Owens finished with 29 saves and Barchard had 38 as Curry out-shot the Jumbos 41-31, including 18-10 in the second. Pieri finished with a goal and an assist for Tufts, joining Curry's Kaneshiro as multiple-point scorers.
The Colonels improved to 1-2-2 overall and next play at Trinity on Saturday. Tufts (1-2) goes on to the Rutland Herald Invitational at Castleton State College this weekend, opening against Brockport on Saturday.
