Men's Lacrosse Falls Narrowly at Southern Maine
Gorham, ME - The Curry College men's lacrosse team dropped a tightly contested matchup on Sunday afternoon, falling to the University of Southern Maine 8–7 at Hannaford Field. With the loss, the Colonels move to 0–3 on the season while the Huskies improve to 2–2.
Southern Maine struck first with back-to-back goals from Owen Gaulrapp midway through the opening quarter to take a 2–0 lead. Curry answered quickly as Nicholas Cole scored off a feed from Donovan Mawhinney with 5:29 remaining in the frame. Less than a minute later, Cole struck again, this time finishing a pass from Sam Melia to even the score at 2–2 heading into the second quarter.
Curry briefly took its first lead early in the second period when Kai Johnson scored unassisted just 32 seconds in. The Huskies responded with a goal from Zach Smith before Mawhinney finished an assist from Cole to restore the Colonels' advantage at 4–3. Southern Maine countered with two goals in quick succession from Adam Coley and Gaulrapp, but Kyle Bouley tied the game at 5–5 with an unassisted marker at the 7:55 mark. Coley added another goal late in the quarter to give the Huskies a 6–5 halftime lead.
After a scoreless start to the third quarter, Curry pulled even when Jed Cappuccino scored off a pass from Cole with 7:18 remaining, knotting the game at 6–6 heading into the final period.
Southern Maine regained the lead early in the fourth quarter when Patrick O'Driscoll converted a man-up opportunity at 10:26. Cole answered for Curry midway through the frame, scoring on the extra-man chance to tie the contest at 7–7. The Huskies however, delivered the decisive goal just under a minute later, as O'Driscoll finished a feed from Coley to secure the 8–7 victory.
Cole led the Colonels offensively with three goals and two assists while Mawhinney added a goal and an assist. Defensively, Curry collected 29 ground balls, led by Bouley's six while Joey Pinto added four and Matt Pfister recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Niko DeCola made 10 saves in the loss.
Curry finished with a narrow edge in shots on goal (19–18), but Southern Maine held advantages in faceoffs (12–7) and ground balls (31–29).
