Colonels Beat St. Joseph's (L.I.), Earn First Season Win
Patchogue, N.Y. — The Curry College men's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season in convincing fashion on Wednesday evening, defeating St. Joseph's University–Long Island, 10–1, in non-conference action.
The Colonels improved to 1–3 on the year after controlling the game on both ends of the field, outshooting the Golden Eagles 37–21 while holding them scoreless over the final three quarters.
Curry wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Max Ritt found the back of the net with an unassisted goal just over six minutes into the opening quarter. Nicholas Cole followed with another unassisted tally at the 9:45 mark, giving the Colonels an early 2–0 advantage.
St. Joseph's answered midway through the first quarter when Caden Stubba converted a pass from Matt Cioffi to cut the deficit to 2–1, but it would be the only goal the Golden Eagles scored all night.
The Colonels regained control in the second quarter as Donovan Mawhinney finished a feed from Harry Michaud to extend the lead to 3–1. Later in the period, Jed Cappuccino connected on a pass from Cole, sending Curry into halftime with a 4–1 advantage.
Curry continued to build momentum in the third quarter. Cole scored his second goal of the night off an assist from Kai Johnson, before completing a natural hat trick with a man-down goal off a pass from Mawhinney. Mawhinney then added another tally with just three seconds remaining in the period, finishing a setup from Johnson to give Curry a commanding 7–1 lead.
The Colonels kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter. Mawhinney recorded his third goal of the game on an assist from Kyle Bouley, before Cole added his fourth goal of the night on an unassisted effort. Michaud capped the scoring with a late goal to seal the 10–1 victory.
Cole led all scorers with four goals and an assist while firing a team-high 12 shots. Mawhinney added a hat trick and an assist, while Johnson contributed two assists in the win. Michaud also finished with a goal and an assist for the Colonels.
Defensively, Curry controlled possession throughout the contest, winning the ground ball battle 39–34 and forcing 35 turnovers.
In goal, Niko DeCola turned in a strong performance, stopping 11 shots while allowing just one goal across the full 60 minutes to earn the victory.
