Milton, MA – A strong performance from Nicholas Cole highlighted the day, but Curry College men's lacrosse fell to Western New England University men's lacrosse, 13-7, Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.
Cole led the Colonels with three goals and two assists, while Donovan Mawhinney added a pair of goals. Blake Rothstein and Jed Cappuccino also found the back of the net for Curry.
After Curry struck first on an unassisted tally from Cole, Western New England responded with a dominant opening quarter, scoring seven unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead after one.
The Golden Bears extended their advantage in the second quarter behind goals from Logan Jenkins and Jacob Roy, pushing the lead to 10-1 before Curry answered late in the half. A man-up goal from Mawhinney and another score from Cole trimmed the deficit to 10-3 heading into halftime.
Western New England added the lone goal of the third quarter to stretch the lead to 11-3, controlling possession throughout much of the period.
Curry mounted a push in the fourth, scoring four straight goals in just over three minutes. Rothstein, Cappuccino, Cole, and Mawhinney each tallied during the run to cut the deficit to 11-7 with 10:27 remaining.
However, the Golden Bears halted the momentum with back-to-back goals, including Jenkins' fifth of the game, to seal the 13-7 final.
In goal, Niko DeCola made 19 saves for Curry, facing 48 shots. Jenkins paced Western New England with five goals and two assists, while Roy added three goals and four assists in the win.
