WATERVILLE, Maine – The Curry College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision on the road to Thomas College on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field. Forward Kaden Puglia netted his fourth goal of the season for the Colonels, but a hat trick from Thomas striker Shafi Ibrahim proved to be the difference.
The Terriers (1-3-0) set the tone early, striking twice in the opening 15 minutes. Ibrahim opened the scoring in the 8th minute off a feed from Micky Woodrow, then doubled the lead just six minutes later with a finish set up by David Ivarsson. Despite Thomas piling up 16 first-half shots, Curry goalkeeper Ryan McGourty stood tall with multiple stops to keep the Colonels within reach, sending the match into halftime at 2-0.
Curry (1-2-1) responded after the break, building momentum through possession and set pieces. The breakthrough came in the 59th minute when Puglia converted a pass from Matthew Drons, pulling the Colonels back within one at 2-1. The goal marked Puglia's team-leading fourth of the year.
Just when Curry looked poised to turn the tide, Ibrahim struck again less than three minutes later. The forward completed his hat trick in the 62nd minute with an unassisted effort that restored Thomas's two-goal advantage. From there, the Terriers managed the match, while McGourty continued to battle in net, finishing with six saves on nine shots on goal.
The Colonels generated six of their seven total shots in the second half, with Joseph Ruffino and Jose Comella each putting efforts on frame, but Thomas goalkeeper Diego Barcelos and substitute Jamie Fischer combined for two saves to preserve the win.
With the loss, Curry falls to 1-2-1 on the season and will look to regroup as they are on the road again Tuesday night at Springfield College.
