Men’s Soccer Secures 2-1 Victory Over Mass. Maritime
MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 non-conference victory over Mass. Maritime Academy on Tuesday night at Walter M. Katz Field. With the result, the Colonels improve to 3-6-2 overall, while the Buccaneers fall to 5-4-1.
Curry wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, striking twice in the opening 20 minutes. In the 13th minute, junior Justin Castillo gave the Colonels the early lead, finishing a feed from midfielder Ray Weinstein to make it 1-0. Just five minutes later, Curry doubled its advantage when sophomore forward Lucas Drons netted home a penalty kick which moves him a goal closer to tying the schools all-time goals record.
Mass. Maritime responded before halftime, cutting the deficit in the 40th minute. John Burke converted on a penalty to bring the Buccaneers within one at 2-1. Despite heavy offensive pressure the rest of the way, including 27 total shots and 14 on goal, the Buccaneers were unable to find the equalizer against a resilient Curry defense.
Goalkeeper Justin Ritz turned in a standout performance for the Colonels, making 12 saves across 90 minutes to preserve the win. Ritz was particularly sharp in the second half, stopping seven shots as Mass. Maritime pressed for a late goal. Defenders Ryan Koster and Lukas Dambauskas also played key roles in limiting dangerous chances inside the box.
Curry finished with nine total shots, five of which were on target, showing efficiency in the attacking third. Alongside Castillo and Drons' goals, Weinstein's playmaking in the midfield and Kaden Puglia's two shot attempts kept the Buccaneers' back line busy throughout the night.
The Colonels were outshot 27-9 and conceded 14 corner kicks, but their defensive discipline and goalkeeping proved decisive in securing the result. The victory marks a positive bounce-back for Curry as they look to build momentum heading into the heart of conference play.
Curry returns to action on Saturday, October 4th, when they travel for a Conference of New England battle against the Bison of Nichols College.
