MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team put up a strong fight against undefeated Roger Williams University, but ultimately fell 2-1 on Tuesday night in Conference of New England (CNE) action at Walter M. Katz Field. With the result, the Colonels drop to 3-10-2 overall (0-7-0 CNE), while the Hawks remain unbeaten at 10-0-4 (5-0-1 CNE).
Roger Williams opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Louis Hawkins capitalized on a counter-attack setup from Dylan Robbins, slotting a low shot past Curry goalkeeper Justin Ritz for the early 1-0 advantage. The Colonels, however, showed resilience and responded quickly. In the 22nd minute, Kaden Puglia put a ball into the box which deflected off a Hawks defender and found it's way into the back of the net for a goal to equalize the score at 1-1. The goal marked Puglia's sixth of the season.
The second half featured an intense back-and-forth battle, but the Hawks' offensive pressure eventually broke through. In the 52nd minute, Brandon Rodriguez finished a ball that had bounced around and found his head as he flicked it in past Ritz to go ahead 2-1. Despite Curry's defensive composure and a few promising counterattacks, the Colonels couldn't find a late equalizer.
Ritz kept the Colonels competitive with a stellar performance in goal, recording seven saves against nine shots on target. On the other end, Roger Williams keeper Eliot Panaccione made one save in the win.
The Colonels will now look ahead to Friday, where they will play the second game of a doubleheader under the lights at Katz Field for Senior Night.
