Colonels Drop Senior Day Game to Maine-Fort Kent
MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2–1 decision to Maine–Fort Kent on Friday night at Walter M. Katz Field. Despite a strong defensive effort and a first-half equalizer, the Colonels were unable to overcome a second-half goal by the Bengals.
Prior to the start of the match, the Colonels seniors were recognized for the commitment to the program. This years senior class includes: Brendan Cunningham (#1), Malcom Kawuba (#9), Chris Kourtelidis (#10), Lucas Drons (#20), Daniel Rodriguez (#24), and Justin Ritz (#99).
Maine–Fort Kent (6-2-5) struck early, finding the back of the net just under three minutes into the match when Deandre Smith scored off an assist from Michael German and Boliver Owusu to give the Bengals a 1–0 advantage. Curry (3-11-2) responded well, settling into possession and creating several chances. The Colonels broke through in the 17th minute when Claudio Laquale converted off a feed at the top of the box from Aiden Grafton, knotting the score at 1–1.
The match remained even through the rest of the first half as both teams traded looks, but neither side could pull ahead before the break. Maine–Fort Kent reclaimed the lead less than a minute into the second half, as Michael German capitalized on a defensive miscue to make it 2–1.
Curry continued to battle throughout the second half, with shots from Nathan Stoltz and Ray Weinstein testing the Bengal goalkeeper, but the Colonels couldn't find the equalizer. Goalkeepers Brendan Cunningham and Justin Ritz combined for six saves in the contest, while the Curry defense withstood 10 corner kicks from Maine–Fort Kent.
Laquale led the Colonels offensively with two shots and the team's lone goal, while Grafton tallied his second assist of the season.
The Colonels will return to Conference of New England (CNE) play on Wednesday, October 22nd when they travel to Endicott.
