MILTON, Mass. – Curry College men's soccer captured their first conference victory on Friday, rallying from an early deficit to defeat the University of New England 3–1 at Walter M. Katz Field.
UNE jumped ahead in the 19th minute when Bruno Correia converted off a setup from Corbin Schreindorfer, giving the Nor'easters a 1–0 lead. However, Curry wasted little time responding. Just seven minutes later, senior defender Ryan Treacy broke through with the equalizer, burying a header off the cross from Ray Weinstein in the 26th minute to make it 1–1 heading into halftime.
The Colonels carried that momentum into the second half, dominating possession and outshooting UNE 11–6 over the final 45 minutes. Weinstein, who was active all night in the midfield, put Curry ahead for good in the 66th minute when he finished a second-chance opportunity on a rebound from Joseph Ruffino to make it 2–1.
Ruffino then provided the dagger less than three minutes later, capitalizing on a breakaway to slot home an unassisted goal in the 68th minute and extend the Colonels' lead to 3–1.
Curry's defensive unit, anchored by Justin Castillo, Ryan Koster, and Christopher Rochefort, kept the Nor'easters in check for the remainder of the match. Senior goalkeeper Justin Ritz made two saves in the victory, improving his record to 3–5–1 on the year.
Offensively, the Colonels outshot UNE 21–12 and held a 6–5 edge in corner kicks. Weinstein and Ruffino led the way with a goal and an assist apiece, while Treacy added his first tally of the season in the opening half.
UNE goalkeeper Sean MacDonald was kept busy throughout, recording 11 saves against Curry's 14 shots on target.
With the result, the Colonels gain their first points in Conference of New England (CNE) play, and look to finish out their conference regular season strong against University of Hartford on Tuesday, October 28th.
