MILTON, Mass. – Visiting Johnson & Wales defeated Curry, 7-2, in non-conference men’s tennis action Friday afternoon in Milton. The Wildcats upped their season record to 1-1, while the Colonels slipped to 0-4.

Johnson & Wales began the day by capturing two of three doubles matches. Senior James Adriano and sophomore Mars Wala defeated senior Tyler Collins and freshman Toma Blatchford, 8-6, at #1 doubles. After the Curry freshmen duo of Charlie Paltsios and Rob Knight knocked off freshman Adam Beady and senior Drew Pointillo, 8-4, at #2, JWU freshman Jason Chavenson and sophomore Jake McGuire took care of senior Lucas Donaway and sophomore Eric Hellberg, 8-2, at #3.

All but two of the six singles matches were closely-contested affairs. Wala cruised past Paltsios (6-1, 6-0) at #3, while Pointillo handled Donaway (6-2, 6-4) at #5. But Chavenson and Beady each needed a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Blatchford and Knight at #2 and #4, respectively. Adriano took a decisive 10-8 third set to turn back Collins at #1. The Colonels avoided a sweep in singles when Hellberg came from behind to post a 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over McGuire at #6.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at home at noon, as the Wildcats host Anna Maria and the Colonels welcome Eastern Nazarene.
