Men's Volleyball Falls in Five Sets in Season Opener
Weston, MA - The Curry Men's Volleyball team fell in their season opening match at Regis on Wednesday in five sets. The final score was 25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-11 in favor of the Pride.
The two teams traded blows, as Regis won the first set, but the Colonels answered in the second, despite falling behind early. They trailed 7-3 in the set, but started to put some runs together, and a 4-0 run later gave them a 17-15 lead. The Pride would retake the lead with a 5-0 run of their own, but Curry won the set 25-23 after scoring five of the last six points. The Colonels then put their backs against the wall by dropping the third set. They responded with a good start to the fourth, and held an 18-12 lead. But seven straight points from Regis put them on the verge of taking the match. But an immediate 6-0 run by Curry allowed for the Colonels to ultimately take the set 25-22, and force a fifth and final set. But Regis would race out to a 4-0 lead in the match decider, and the Colonels were unable to get closer than two, dropping it 15-11.
It was a mixture of new and returning players for the Colonels, as five of the nine players who played for the Colonels are freshmen. Despite that, the returners that did play made their presence known. Michael Swanigan and Chris Milfort led the team on offense, combining for 32 of the team's 47 kills. Swanigan had 17 and Milfort 15. Milo Barry Young was a monster at the net, totaling eight blocks. Nyko Whitaker set the table for the Colonels, collecting 36 set assists in his first collegiate match. Also contributing in their first ever match was Brock Beggs, as he had eight kills on 14 attempts.
Up Next - The Colonels will host both Rivier and Adrian on Saturday as part of a tri-match that kicks off at 11am.
