Softball Sweeps a Doubleheader from Visiting Johnson & Wales

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College swept visiting Johnson & Wales, 3-2 and 5-0, in a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Milton. The Colonels upped their record to 6-4, while the Wildcats fell to 3-7.
GAME ONE
In the opener, Johnson & Wales took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, as Tayla Gardner led off with a double to centerfield and later scored on a bunt by Taylor Cwalinski. Pinch-runner Lindsay Driscoll ran for Kelsey Dunn who singled, and Driscoll came home on an RBI groundout by Alyssa Babineau. Curry responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to RBI singles from Caitlin Luquet, Ariel LaRosa and Chelsey Munsey. Colonels’ starter Taylor Ahearn shut down the Wildcats over the final two innings to preserve the 3-2 win.
Luquet and LaRosa each collected two hits to go along with their one RBI. Ahearn (4-1) tossed a complete-game three-hitter, allowing one walk and one earned run while striking out five. Cwalinski (1-3) went the distance but absorbed the loss, surrendering six hits, five walks and three earned runs while fanning six.
GAME TWO
In the nightcap, the hosts shot out to a 3-0 first-inning lead. Megan Flaherty led off with a bunt single and later scored on a LaRosa RBI base hit. LaRosa eventually came around on a throwing error by Wildcats’ catcher Rachel Rice, then Taryn Vigeant followed with an RBI hit that scored Munsey. Curry tacked on two more runs thanks to Amanda Felzmann, who stroked a run-scoring double in the second inning and an RBI triple in the sixth.
Felzmann went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs knocked in. Colonels’ starter Jennifer Lundstrom (1-2) went the distance, hurling a six-hit shutout with no walks and four strikeouts. Dunn collected a pair of hits for Johnson & Wales, while Gardner (1-3) was tagged with the loss. She threw six innings, allowing eight hits, three earned runs, and four walks while striking out two.
Curry resumes play on Thursday, traveling to Fitchburg State for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader. Johnson & Wales opens its conference schedule on Friday, hosting Rivier in a 3:30 p.m. twin bill.
