Wentworth
Boston, MA - The Curry Softball team split their Sunday doubleheader with Wentworth, winning the first game 3-0 in eight innings, before dropping the second game 9-5. The Colonels are now 6-10 on the season, and 1-3 in CNE play. The Leopards are now 4-13 and 2-2. The win in game one was Curry head coach Alex Campione's 100th career win.
Game One
In an old school pitcher's duel, the Colonels and Leopards went a full seven innings without either team scoring a run. But with a runner placed on second to begin the extra frame, the Colonels were able to break the deadlock. The first run came on an error by the Wentworth catcher, which was then followed by back to back RBI singles from Tara Goldman and Cailene Dupras. The Colonels then shut down the Leopards in the bottom half of the inning to win 3-0.
In a weird coincidence, Curry pitcher Morgan Barmash started the game, and recorded every out, but did not pitch a complete game. Barmash pitched the first three innings, and was then moved to third base while Ana Tsonis came in to pitch. She faced two batters, walking the first and then giving up a double. With runners on second and third, Barmash reentered the pitching circle to get three outs to strand the runners, and never looked back. Across the eight innings she allowed five hits and no runs, striking out one batter, and only walking one batter.
As a team, the Colonels had five hits, all singles, with two coming from Tara Goldman.
While her career record puts her at 101 career wins, Campione missed a game on April 14, 2024 that the Colonels won, making Sunday's win her 100th career win. The win happening at Wentworth is fitting for Campione, as she spent her first three years as a head coach at WIT from 2016 to 2018. Campione has the second most wins in Curry softball history with 63.
Game Two
The second game started out being all Wentworth, as the Leopards scored once in the second, twice in the third, and four times in the fourth, going up 7-0. But the Colonels bats came alive in the sixth, scoring five runs. Those runs came on an RBI single by Lizzy Helmar, and a pair of two RBI doubles from Kailey Collins-Fiore and Olivia Roy. This made it 7-5, but WIT responded with two more runs of their own in the bottom half to make it 9-5, which was ultimately the final score.
The Colonels had eight hits in the game, which came from eight different players.
Up Next - The Colonels will stay in conference play, as they host RWU on Tuesday at 3pm
