Women's Basketball Advances to Championship Game of Curry Tournament After 73-54 Win Over Mount Ida
MILTON, Mass. – First-round results from the 2010 Curry College Women’s Basketball Tip-Off Tournament:
Curry 73, Mount Ida 54

Mount Ida jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after a jumper by junior center Katie Morvan (Northbridge, MA). Curry responded with a 30-4 run that began with a layup by senior forward Danyel Cousins (Brunswick, ME) and was capped off with layup by senior forward Cortney Robinson (Brockton, MA). The Colonels took their biggest lead of the game (41-15) after a jumper by freshman guard Katie King (Dorchester, MA) with 10 seconds left in the first frame.
With 10:01 remaining in the second half, the Mustangs trimmed the lead to 10 (52-42) after a pair of free throws by junior forward Rachel Gilbert (Corunna, IN). Curry answered with an 8-0 run that began with a pair of made free throws by Cousins and was capped off by a pair of made free throws from sophomore forward Julia Scrubb (Stowe, VT).
Cousins led the Colonels with a game-high 23 points. King added added 14 and Scrubb chipped in with 11. Cousins and Robinson led Curry on the glass with nine rebounds apiece.
Mount Ida was led by junior guard Shannon Wood (Gorham, ME) with 21 points. She was followed by Morvan who contributed 12 points. Freshman forward Abigail Fedigan (New Fairfield, CT) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
St. Joseph’s College (ME) 81, UMass Dartmouth 80 (2 OT)
UMass Dartmouth jumped out to an early lead taking their biggest lead of the game (25-12) after a jumper by junior guard Jessica Underwood (Dorchester, MA) with 5:56 remaining in the first half. Saint Joseph’s responded with a 8-0 run that began with a pair of made free throws by senior guard Casey Drake (Lebanon, NH) and was capped off with a free throw by freshman forward Abby Young (North Yarmouth, ME) to cut the Corsairs lead to five (25-20) with 3:36 remaining in the first frame. A jump shot by Corsair sophomore forward Colleen Moriarty (Canton, MA) at the end of the first half gave UMass Dartmouth a 34-27 edge at the half.
The Monks took their second lead (52-51) of the game with 5:27 remaining in the second period after a free throw by junior forward Allie Parent (Camden, ME). Saint Joseph’s took a three point lead (64-61) with 54 seconds remaining in regulation after a pair of made free throws by freshman guard Mackenzie Dufour (Augusta, ME). The Corsairs responded with a made layup on a foul by freshman forward Erika Bornemann (Canton, MA) to put her at the charity stripe with 18 seconds left on the clock. Bornemann converted on the free throw to send the game into overtime.
With 1:48 remaining in the first overtime, UMass Dartmouth took a five point lead (74-69) after a three-pointer by freshman guard Meghan Sheehan (Carver, MA). The Monks junior forward Megan McDevitt (Cumberland, ME) hit a three with 1:22 left to trim the lead to two. A steal and a layup by Parent notched the game up at 74-74 to send the game into double overtime.
The Corsairs jumped out to another lead in the second overtime after a layup by Bornemann put them up by six (80-74) with 3:24 remaining. Saint Joseph’s went on a 7-0 run that began with a layup by Young and was capped off with another layup by Parent to give them the lead (81-80) with 13 seconds left.
Sophomore guard Danyelle Shufelt (Sutton, VT) led the Monks with 16 points. Young chipped in with 15, Parent added 14, McDevitt contributed 13 and Drake scored 12. Saint Joseph’s was led by Parent and junior center Ashley Geel (St. George, ME) on the boards, pulling down nine rebounds apiece.
UMass Dartmouth was led by junior guard Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, MA) with a game-high 21 points. Bornemann contributed 16, senior guard Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA) added 15 and Moriarty scored 13. Bornemann was the game’s high rebounder with 12 boards.
