Colonels Fall in Non-Conference Battle
Milton, MA - Curry women's basketball battled throughout a defensive-minded contest but came up short in a 52–43 loss to WPI at Katz Gymnasium.
The opening quarter was tightly contested as Curry matched WPI early. Ella Palanza helped set the tone on the glass, pulling down rebounds on both ends, while the Colonels stayed aggressive defensively. Curry trailed by just one after the first quarter, 15–14, but offensive momentum proved difficult to sustain as the game progressed.
WPI used a 12–6 advantage in the second quarter to create separation heading into halftime. Curry generated quality looks but struggled to convert, while WPI capitalized at the free-throw line to extend its lead to 27–20 at the break. Despite the deficit, Curry's defensive pressure kept the game within reach.
The Colonels showed resilience coming out of halftime, trimming the margin during the third quarter behind improved energy and defensive effort. Palanza continued to battle inside, finishing with team highs in points (10) and rebounds (10), while Kasey Reeves and Sophie Hilbrunner provided steady contributions in the frontcourt. Curry outscored WPI 12–14 in the third, keeping the deficit manageable entering the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Curry pushed to close the gap and were able to pull within two possessions on multiple occasions but couldn't get over that hump. WPI answered Curry runs with timely baskets and free throws, maintaining control down the stretch and doing enough to secure the win. Jess LaFlamme and Libby Harris each knocked down key three-pointers off the bench, providing sparks, while Grace Fleuriel contributed six rebounds and a block in the paint.
Defensively, Curry held WPI to just 32.6 percent shooting from the field and limited the Engineers to four made three-pointers. The Colonels also forced 19 turnovers and stayed competitive on the boards, finishing with 31 rebounds. However, the Colonels also struggled shooting, with a 21.4 percent overall showing.
Up Next: The Colonels will be home for their third straight on Wednesday, January 14th, hosting the Hawks of University of Hartford.
