Women's Basketball Grabs First CNE Win Over Gordon
Wenham, MA - Curry women's basketball earned a gritty 68–63 road victory at Gordon, using a strong middle stretch and relentless effort on the glass to secure a Conference of New England (CNE). After a slow start in the opening quarter, the Colonels settled in and controlled much of the game behind balanced scoring, aggressive rebounding, and timely defensive plays.
Gordon jumped out early, outscoring Curry 23–14 in the first quarter as the Fighting Scots pushed the tempo and knocked down early shots. Curry responded with poise in the second period, tightening up defensively and attacking the paint. The Colonels outscored Gordon 20–10 in the quarter, flipping the momentum and taking a 34–33 lead into halftime.
The third quarter proved pivotal as Curry continued to assert itself on both ends of the floor. Ella Palanza led the charge, finishing with a game-high 25 points. Palanza went 8-of-14 from the field and added 11 rebounds, giving Curry a steady presence throughout the contest. Sophie Hilbrunner also delivered a strong all-around performance, posting 13 points and matched Palanza with 11 rebounds to help Curry dominate the boards. Samantha Conti also joined her teammates in the double-digit rebounding category, leading all players with 13 on the afternoon.
Curry held a narrow advantage entering the fourth quarter and the team would exchange blows going into the final minutes. With just over a minute remaining, Palanza found a bucket inside to make the Colonel lead 64-61. She would then go on to score the Colonels remaining four points, icing the game at the free throw line and securing the teams first CNE win of the season.
Despite struggling from beyond the arc, Curry compensated by controlling the paint and converting at the foul line, finishing 19-of-32 from the stripe. Across the board the Colonels had key contributions.
In addition to her 13 rebounds, Samantha Conti also had a game-high seven assists, and four steals. Lauren Dunn added seven points, eight rebounds, and four assists, while Lauren Morse provided a spark off the bench with 13 points, including three three-pointers.
Curry finished the game with a commanding 61–38 rebounding advantage, including 26 offensive boards, which proved to be the difference in the back-and-forth contest. The Colonels' ability to generate second-chance opportunities and force turnovers allowed them to overcome shooting struggles and maintain control late.
