Women’s Soccer Falls to RIC in Non-Conference Matchup
The Curry College women's soccer team hosted the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College on Wednesday evening at Walter M. Katz Field, where they fell by a final score of 4-0
MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 4-0 decision to visiting Rhode Island College on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Walter M. Katz Field. With the result, the Colonels move to 2-2 on the season, while the Anchorwomen improve to 3-2.
The opening half was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to generate quality scoring chances. Curry's best look came in the 21st minute when first-year midfielder Laney Phillips put a shot on target, but RIC goalkeeper Nicole Nunes came up with the save. On the other end, senior goalkeeper Lexi Smardon anchored the Colonels' back line with three first-half stops, keeping the game scoreless at the break despite Rhode Island College's 6-2 edge in shots.
The Anchorwomen broke through just 42 seconds into the second half. Tayshia Cary slotted home a finish off a feed from Amber Almeida to give RIC a 1-0 advantage. The visitors continued to press, doubling their lead in the 60th minute when defender Karen Johnson-Hoffman buried a long distance strike. Johnson-Hoffman would play a role again in the 70th minute, as midfielder Caitlyn Terceiro scored off a rebound chance to make it 3-0.
Curry continued to battle, pushing forward and earning a corner kick in the 71st minute, but was unable to convert. The Anchorwomen sealed the match in the 83rd minute when Johnson-Hoffman tallied her second of the night, assisted by Terceiro and Oceanna Orlandi, capping the 4-0 scoreline.
Smardon finished with three saves in the contest while facing 17 total shots. Phillips, Jovi Goldstein, and Megan Hudson recorded the Colonels' three attempts, with Phillips registering the lone shot on goal.
Curry will look to bounce back when they return to action on Saturday, September 13th, hosting Gordon College.
