MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team came up just short in a tightly contested non-conference matchup on Wednesday night, falling 3-2 to UMass Boston at Walter M. Katz Field. With the result, the Colonels drop to 2-4-0 on the year, while the Beacons improve to 4-1-1.
Curry started brightly, breaking the deadlock in the 25th minute. Junior midfielder Jovi Goldstein fired home an unassisted strike to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead. UMass Boston responded with sustained pressure, outshooting Curry 12-6 in the opening frame, and found their breakthrough late in the half.
In the 40th minute, forward Sofia Schallmo evened the score with an unassisted tally, her first of two on the night. Just over two minutes later, Schallmo set up Sofia Roberts for a finish, sending the Beacons into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
The visitors extended their lead midway through the second half when Schallmo again made her presence felt. The sophomore forward struck in the 69th minute to push the Beacons' cushion to 3-1. Curry refused to back down, however, and halved the deficit in the 79th minute. Goldstein netted her second goal of the game—this time assisted by Catia Fernandes—to keep the Colonels within striking distance.
Despite a late surge that included four second-half shots and a pair of corner kicks, Curry was unable to find the equalizer. Goldstein led the Colonels' attack with three shots, all on target, while Mia Schena added two shots, including one on frame. Goalkeeper Lexi Smardon turned away eight shots while facing 21 total attempts to keep Curry in contention throughout the night.
Curry returns to action on Saturday, September 20th, when they resume Conference of New England (CNE) play at home, hosting the Leopards of Wentworth at 2 PM.
