DUDLEY, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team turned in a dominant performance on the road Saturday afternoon, defeating Nichols College 4-1 in Conference of New England (CNE) action at Nichols Soccer Field. With the victory, the Colonels improve to 4-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 in league play, while the Bison drop to 1-10-1 and 0-4-0 in conference competition.
The Colonels wasted no time setting the tone offensively, finding the back of the net twice in the opening 16 minutes. Junior forward Mia Schena opened the scoring in the eighth minute, finishing a well-executed play assisted by Catia Fernandes and Nicole Hudson. Moments later, the roles reversed as Schena provided the setup for Fernandes, who slotted home her second goal of the season to make it 2-0.
Curry carried its momentum into the second half, striking quickly after the break. Fernandes notched her second tally of the game in the 49th minute off a feed from midfielder Adelina Young, extending the lead to 3-0. Just two minutes later, Hudson added her team-leading eighth goal of the season, with Fernandes picking up the assist, as the Colonels surged to a 4-0 advantage.
Nichols managed to get on the board in the 59th minute when Haley Bethin converted a penalty kick, but the Bison were unable to generate additional scoring opportunities against a strong Curry back line. The Colonels' defense, anchored by goalkeeper Lexi Smardon, limited Nichols' chances and preserved the three-goal cushion the rest of the way.
Curry's offensive trio of Schena, Fernandes, and Hudson proved too much for the Bison to handle, combining for all four goals and three assists on the day. Fernandes led the charge with two goals and two assists, while Schena recorded a goal and an assist and Hudson added both a goal and an assist of her own.
The win marks Curry's first conference victory of the season and provides momentum as the Colonels head into the second half of their CNE slate. Curry returns to action on Wednesday, October 8th at 4 PM, travelling to face the Golden Bears of Western New England.
