RUTLAND, Vt. – A goal just one minute into the overtime period by sophomore Alex Maunula (Helsinki, Finland) was the difference as Castleton University slipped by the No. 15 Curry College men's ice hockey team in a 3-2 final in the consolation game of the Castleton Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.
The Colonels tallied the first goal of the game 7:25 into the opening period on a marker by freshman Nicholas Favaro (Vaughn, Ontario). Favaro's finish was his first goal of the season. It was assisted by sophomore Alex Ochterbeck (Dallas, Texas) and junior Viktor Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden). With his performance, Favaro was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Spartans tied the game with 8:14 remaining in the second frame. Sophomore Sam Rennert (Raleigh, N.C.) fired in a shot from the left-wing circle, which was set up by helpers from classmate Jason Bilski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Jacob Erwin (Port Dover, Ontario). Just over a minute later, Curry regained the advantage on a short-handed score from sophomore Mic Curran (Arlington, Mass.) on a breakaway opportunity and beat Castleton junior goaltender Luke Cohen (Huntington, N.Y.) glove-side for the 2-1 advantage.
The Spartans registered the game-tying goal with 4:21 left in regulation. Sophomore Kyle Kazeroid (Chicopee, Mass.) found himself right in front of the net and finished off a shot by way of assists from junior Glenn Wiswell (Berwick, Maine) and senior Troy Taylor (Mississauga, Ontario).
The contest headed into a five-minute sudden-death overtime period and Castleton wasted little time finding the back of the net to end it. Sophomore Jahwara Rennalls (Sandy Hill, Ontario) sent a pass up-ice into the offensive zone to find Maunula. Maunula dodged one Colonel defender and put a shot past senior assistant captain goaltender Justin Ketola (Cloquet, Minn.) for the golden goal and the game-winner.
Curry held a 33-25 edge in shots. Both teams were empty on the power-play as the Colonels were 0-for-1 and Castleton was 0-for-6.
Cohen made 31 saves in goal to record his first win of the season. Ketola tallied 22 stops in defeat.
Curry (8-2-1 overall) resumes conference play with a road contest at the University of New England on Friday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m. Castleton (2-6-1 overall) travels to league opponent Norwich University for its next game on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
