Canton, MA - The Curry Men's Hockey team opened the new year up with an overtime loss to SUNY Skidmore on Friday, falling 3-2. The Colonels are now 6-4 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds are 5-5-2. This marked the first time since 2012 that the two teams met, and fourth overall. The Colonels had won the previous three meetings.
The Colonels struck first, scoring halfway through the first period, as Gage Dill caused a turnover, and then raced into the offensive zone, firing the puck past the goalie. It stayed that way through the first intermission. The Colonels then doubled their lead early in the second on a Jett Otwell goal assisted by Nolan McDonough and Mason Kesselring. Just three minutes later the Thoroughbreds got one back, and cut the Colonels lead in half. The score would stay 2-1 until early in the third when Skidmore tied things up. With things tied at two at the end of regulation, the game went to OT, where the visitors were able to score first to get the win.
The Thoroughbreds won the faceoff battle 41-32, while the Colonels outshot them 33-25.
Colonels goalie Thomas Heaney stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced.
Up Next - The Colonels schedule doesn't get any easier, as they host #5 Hamilton on Saturday at 5:30pm.
