WENHAM, Mass. – The Curry College men's soccer team lost to Gordon College on Saturday evening in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match. After the loss, the Colonels sit at 2-12-1 with a 0-5-0 record in league play. The Fighting Scots improve to 5-8-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the CCC.
The hosts got the scoring early, as a fifth minute goal made its way past the Curry keeper off the boot of Ben Mollenhauer (Burlington, Mass.). Jarvin Ramirez (Milton, Ga.) was credited with the helper on the score. Despite the early deficit, the Colonels made Gordon work, putting up five first half shots, three of which were on goal. Gordon goalie Brody Veleber (Coatesville, Pa.) managed to keep Curry scoreless through the first frame and got a boost from his offense, which doubled the lead at 2-0 as Julius Swaim (Bedford, Mass.) scored his fifth goal of the year in the 43rd minute. Mollenhauer picked up his third point of the day with the assist.
Jan Bacerra (Chappaqua, N.Y.) held his ground for Curry in goal as the second half got underway, collecting three saves in a four minute span to keep the deficit at just two. Curry looked to work their way back into the match, but Gordon controlled time-of-possession, preventing their guests from taking any shots over the final 20 minutes of action. In that time, Michael Hahn (West Chester, Pa.) tacked on another insurance goal for Gordon, unassisted, to make the score 3-0, which would stand to be the final.
Ramirez led the Scots with four shots in the match while the Colonels were topped by Jonathan Caldwell (East Weymouth, Mass., 3). Bacerra (0-4-1) turned in six saves while his counterpart, Veleber (5-3-1), collected three.
The Colonels will head home to take on the Salve Regina Seahawks at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23 in another CCC contest. The Scots also get back to conference action on Wednesday, with a 7:00 p.m. road tilt at Roger Williams.
