Newcomb, Perzan Tabbed as 2021 Softball Captains
MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team has announced its captains for the 2021 season. Senior pitcher/second baseman Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass. / Mount Saint Charles Academy) and classmate catcher/outfielder Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Conn./Lewis Mills) were chosen by their coaches and teammates to lead the 2021 Colonels for the upcoming season. This will be the second season as a team captain for Newcomb and the first season for Perzan.
"I am excited for the team to have these two players chosen to be our leaders," stated Head Coach Bruce Weckworth, who enters his 26th season at the helm. "Their actions on and off the field exemplify the type of student-athlete that we want in our program."
Newcomb has had a very solid career for the Colonels. In the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season, she was batting .308 after the 10 games in Florida on the team's spring break trip. Her leadership skills were very noticed during her first season as one of the team captains. As a sophomore, she played in all 35 games, batted .290, had 29 hits, and compiled the lowest ERA on the squad. In her three years of Curry Softball, Newcomb has played in 77 games, has 54 hits, and has an overall batting average of .274. Newcomb also has a solid academic record with a cumulative GPA of 3.43 as a Public Health and Wellness major and has earned 95 credits in her three years at the College. Newcomb was also chosen as the team's Unsung Hero Award winner for the 2019 season.
Perzan was having an unbelievable spring break trip in 2020 when the season was suspended because of COVID-19. She was batting .455, had 15 hits including a double, a home run, and had 10 RBI. As a sophomore, she batted .291, had 23 hits, drove in 20 runs, and hit 3 home runs. Perzan came down with mono and was unable to finish that campaign. In her three years of Curry Softball, Perzan has played in 70 games, has 62 hits, and has an overall batting average of .308. Perzan also has a solid academic record with a cumulative GPA of 3.38 as a Nursing major and has earned 99 credits in her three years at the College. She is a member of the Curry College Student Nurses Association. Perzan has also been active in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) group on campus and was chosen as the Rookie of the Year for the 2018 season.
